On Friday evening, November 1, WRPI will begin regular FM Broadcasting. At special ceremonies, attended by campus and local dignitaries, John F. Morse, Vice-President of the Institute, will push the button which will begin the regular FM broadcasts.
At 8:00 p.m. Dick Ames, president of WRPI, will begin the program, acting as emcee. The entire program will be on WRPI AM. Mr. Morse will speak at 8:15 on relations of RPI through WRPI and the community. He will push the button putting the FM transmitter on the air at 8:30.
Among the invited guests will be Thomas S. Murphy, General Manager of station WROW; John Purcell, Mayor of Troy; and Samuel S. Stratton, Mayor of Schenectady. Others invited include many members of the administration, the heads of all campus publications, Presidents of all classes, members of Phalanx, and former WRPI alumni through 1947. Many business leaders in the area have also been invited.
Entire Program on TV
The entire proceedings will be filmed by WCDA-TV, channels 29, 41 and 19, and will be shown in full at eleven that night. Members of the local press, radio stations, and national wire services have also been notified about the event.
As a special feature, a new Saturday night schedule will go into effect as soon as the FM transmitter goes into operation. The programs, aimed at men in fraternities and off campus in general, will consist of jazz and instrumentals. All programs will be broadcast simultaneously on AM and FM.
Among the new equipment at WRPI is the FM transmitter, donated by WROW, an antenna which stands 35 feet above the roof of the 15th Street Lounge, a frequency monitor, and a Conelrad monitor which will alert the station on any Civil Defense emergency so that it may get off the air.
Tri-City Area Covered
Recent tests have shown that the 1000 watt FM transmitter will allow WRPI-FM to be heard in all of Troy, Albany, Schenectady, and Saratoga. WRPI-FM will be located at 91.5 mc. while the AM portion of the station will continue at 640 on your regular radio.
Below is the regular schedule of WRPI and WRPI-FM. The only changes will be when the stations carry all home winter and spring sports. It is also hoped that this year's away hockey games can be carried.
